IIT JEE 2010 exam held all across India today was given by a whopping 4.72 lakh students, contesting for around 10 thousand seats. The papers were not a surprise as per the syllabus or questions or subjects. But there was some confusion about the sequence of questions in the paper and the OMR response sheets. The patterns of both papers were again in lines with the last years’ pattern.
The paper was consisting of Chemistry, Mathematics & Physics. There were 10 sets of the paper. The total scoring was from 489 marks (inclusive of both papers), with 163 maximum marks per subject.
Overall, in the paper, the Chemistry section was packed by organic questions from Basics of Hydrocarbons, Alchols, Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids and finally Practical Organic Chemistry. The physical chemistry topics dominated the paper with varied topics like Thermodynamics & Thermo Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics & Nuclear Chemistry and Ionic Equilibrium.
Physics topics of Mechanics were wiped off the paper. Topics like Oscillations, Heat & Thermodynamics and Current Electricity dominated the paper. Optics & Modern Physics were way behind with only a few questions.
Aspirants quoted that the level of Mathematics questions was little tough, but had no surprises. Matrices & Determinants, Permutations & Combinations, Conics and Vector Algebra & Three Dimensional Geometry topics flooded the Mathematics sections. It was more of an practical and application oriented paper.
PAPER-I

28 questions per subject totaling to 84 marks each in PCM |
Marking scheme was distributed across all sections of the subjects. Each subject was further subdivided into four sections based on the marking scheme.
For each question in Section I, 3 marks was awarded for correct attempt and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases, minus one (−1) mark will be deducted.
For each question in Section II, aspirants will be awarded 3 marks if correct answer is marked appropriately and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. Partial marks will be awarded for partially correct answers. No negative marks will be awarded in this section.
In Section III, for each question, students will be awarded 3 marks if they darken only the bubble corresponding to the correct answer and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases, minus one (−1) mark will be deducted.
In Section IV, one can get 3 marks for the corresponding correct answer and zero mark if no bubble is darkened. No negative marks will be awarded for in this Section.
This pattern of marking scheme is the crucial factor to be tackled by the aspirants.

The second paper was on the comparison had all the basic components as was in 2009. The question paper consisted of 3 Parts (Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics), and each part consists of four Sections.
For each question in Section I, they will be awarded 5 marks if have darkened only the bubble corresponding to the correct answer, zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases, minus two (2) marks will be reduced.
For each question in Section II, students will be awarded 3 marks if darkened the bubble corresponding to the correct answer, zero mark if no bubble is darkened. No negative marks will be awarded for incorrect answers in this section.
For each question in Section III, one will get 3 Marks for darkening only the bubble corresponding to the correct answer and zero mark if no bubbles are darkened. In all other cases, minus one(1) mark will be awarded.
For each question in Section IV, candidates will be awarded 2 marks for each row in which they have darkened the bubble(s) corresponding to the correct answer. Thus, each question in this section carries a maximum of 8 marks. There is no negative mark awarded for incorrect answer(s) in this Section.
The overall difficulty level of the entrance was more or less same as in 2009.
Expected cut-offs for 2010 (based on statistical information of scores). This is based on preliminary analysis and would be updated (if necessary) later.

In case IIT-JEE is still your dream, you must reappear in 2011 with focused and intense preparation (in case you have one more chance left). However you may appear in other prestigious competitive examinations in the interim period & take decision in favour of best option, after weighing options in hand vis-a-vis your dream of entering IIT.
