WB-JEE 2010 Analysis
The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board was born out
of a concept of holding a common admission test for the Engineering
Colleges of the State of West Bengal. The basic purpose was
to select candidates to be considered for admission to the State
Engineering Colleges on the basis of the results of a single
competitive examination, which would also lead to saving of
time, energy and expenditure on the part of the candidates in
appearing at number of entrance tests.
JEM 2010 was the Entrance Test for admission to different degree
level Engineering & Technology/ Dairy Technology/Pharmacy/
Agricultural Engineering, etc as well as degree level Medical
/ Dental courses in Universities/University Departments/Government
colleges as well as Self Financing Colleges of the State of
West Bengal.
There are three different options for a student while appearing
in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEM-2010) as stated below:

The Examination “JEM-2010” was consisting of 4 (Four)
papers:
Mathematics - 100 marks

There were Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ-type, with four options
including single correct answer) carrying 80% weightage of the
total marks and remaining 20% will be of short answer type.
In MCQ type, for each incorrect response, 33.33% of mark would
be deducted and more than one answer indicated against one question
will be treated as incorrect response/answer. All questions
will have to be answered on specially designed machine gradable
answer sheets (OMR answer sheet). Answers are to be marked using
blue/black ball point pen only on the ‘OMR answer sheet’
and answer to the ‘short questions’ are to be written
in blue/black ball point pen on the answer sheet provided for
the purpose.
Difficulty Level of the Paper
Teachers at Career Forum in the city say that more than one
lakh aspirants appear for the WBJEE exam every year. So primarily
students need to study the higher secondary (HS) syllabus thoroughly.
The WBJEE syllabus was overhauled in 2006. Since then the trend
has been to closely adhere to the state board’s HS syllabus
while setting questions. Earlier, candidates had to face a considerable
number of questions on topics that were not covered by the board
syllabus. In WB-JEE 2010 also the same pattern was followed.
It is best not to go through all the MCQs right at the beginning.
Several questions could be unfamiliar. And this could be demoralising.
So candidates should take one question at a time. I’d
advise that they quickly answer the ones they are familiar with
and not waste time on questions they can’t answer at one
go.
Physics
Since mathematical problems in physics can prove to be a weak
point for students who are not strong in maths, every effort
should be made to attempt non-numerical questions. You could
easily answer at least 15 to 16 non-mathematical questions (among
50) in the physics paper. The paper was EASY to AVERAGE. Scoring
in this section could be quite easy for the students who have
done the HS syllabus thoroughly.

Chemistry
Chemistry was the magical section. It will bring in twist for
the scoring of the merit list. Physical questions from different
sections of the portions dominated the paper, followed by Inorganic
and finally Organic. The questions were quite simple and were
based on the general understanding of the HS syllabus. There
were few tough questions which made the section a deciding factor.
The subjective section was quite easy.

Mathematics
Career Forum students were overjoyed seeing the question paper.
The reason was simple; approximately 12 out of 90 questions
were from our tech sheet and test papers. Overall the paper
can be said as an AVERAGE one, dominated by Algebra and Calculus.
The subjective section consisted of all average level questions.
Only one question on induction was easy. Paper was easy as compared
to WB JEE 2009.

Biology
The biology paper is always a crucial part of the medical entrance
exam. There’s apparently no shortcut to mastering the
subject. The WBJEE Board tests whether a candidate has a solid
grounding in the subject. The number of seats in state medical
colleges is limited, competition is fierce.
This year, at least 25-30 per cent of the questions in biology
were really tough.

We would like to keep our expected cut-offs’ reserved
for the time-being. As per the primary feel of the test takers
and the Career Forum experts, there could be rise in the cut-off,
as the paper was adjudged EASY to AVERAGE. Although “the
speed breakers and a couple of tricky questions might have made
the situation difficult.
