JMET : In-depth Analysis

A postgraduate degree in management is being acutely felt by many engineers of today. Using the management arena to further the technical skills of engineers and graduates from technical backgrounds is what the IITs are seeking to develop.

The JMET is the screening procedure through which the IITs seek to bring all those candidates with a technical background under one roof.

The JMET 2009-10 did not spring any surprises. This multiple choice objective paper was straightforward in its approach and tackling the questions was not an uphill task.

This paper was an absolute treat for those armed with a strategy. A fair distribution of questions in all the four sections gave the candidate approximately 40-45 minutes per section which is a luxury no other MBA Entrance exam offers!

SECTIONAL BREAK - UP

Verbal Communication

An intriguing section which had simple questions but foxing options. There were 30 questions comprising four reading comprehension passages, where logical thinking was required.

The other questions were vocabulary based and a few grammar usage questions.

Highlights

Questions were similar to last year’s Verbal Communication section.

Questions on Reported Speech had close options.

A Logical Approach

A smart move would have been attempting 6-5 questions from all the four reading comprehension passages and attempting at least 12-13 questions from the vocabulary based questions.

Comment: A score of 15+ is possible in this section, while a score of 17+ would be considered good.

Logical Reasoning

In this section, more weightage was given to LR. Overall, the difficulty level was the same as that of last year’s JMET.. This was the easiest section among all the four sections. AR was characterized by a regular mix of matching, blood relation and decision making caselets. There was a lone question on coding decoding.

Highlights

A reasonably sound section with no ups and downs.

The Logical Approach

The scattered graph was a slightly tough reasoning type question which could have been bypassed to save on time.

Quantitative Ability

The difficulty level of this section was the same as that of last year’s. In Higher Maths, the questions were from Linear Programming.

Highlights

Last year’s paper had questions in caselet form. Whereas this year there were less questions based on caselets. There were more individual type questions.

The Logical Approach

Some questions based on higher mathematics could have been ignored as their difficulty level was higher.

Data Interpretation

This section had all kinds of graphs represented by data which had to be deciphered with accuracy. Most of the questions were calculation intensive. All the types of graphs i.e bar graphs, tabular form, histograms, pie charts, line graph and scattered graph were covered in this section.

Highlights

This section was more calculation intensive hence was time consuming.
